Laguna Design Center Spring Market

I had the privilege of attending this great annual event for interior designers at the Laguna Design Center on Tuesday, March 22nd. The free event is a great way for designers to see what new and innovative products are available and to listen to wonderful guest speakers who spoke throughout the day in the different stores. There were two keynote speakers who spoke in the center courtyard. The morning speaker was Christiane Lemieux, who founded Dwell Studio. Her topic was "Building a Design Business in the Modern Landscape". She discussed the difference between the old economy in which trade shows and traditional marketing were the modes of getting your business known. These are no longer relevant in today's world. In this digital economy, you must build a brand online. Get a URL with your name so people know who you are, work with bloggers and use social media- facebook and twitter.

The next speaker I heard was Eleanor McKay, CEO of Niermann Weeks. Her topic on emerging light bulb standards, especially for chandeliers and sconces. Owners of traditional residential lighting will soon have difficulty finding standard incandescent bulbs, because federal law has mandated phasing out inefficient incandescents beginning in 2012. She discussed the good and not-so-good available alternatives: CFL's, LED's and halogen light bulbs.

Some of the other great speakers were furniture manufacturer Eric Brand discussing "think Globally", Barbara Deckmeyer, Marketing Consultant, Interior Designer, Author of "Boost Business with an Interior Design Blog and her discussion on "Social Media", and the other keynote speaker Suzanne Rheinstein who spoke on "Design Details: A Focus on Fabrics".

And finally, ASID presented a forum based on California Interior Design: The "Endangered" Profession, which discussed assessing the legislative climate, learning the facts and share your concerns.

Overall, it was a fun educational day with yummy food and it was all free!
I highly recommend every design student attend in the future.

SAN FRANCISCO'S BAR AGRICOLE

Location: 355 11th street , San Francisco , CA 94103 - Tel: 415-355-9400

Bar Agricole is located on an industrial block of San Francisco. It is designed with contemporary and elegant style incorporating a shibui color scheme.

Applying natural color, rustic and sustainable furnitures, and modern LED lighting will make bar attractive and impressive.

The focus point of the bar is clear glass tube curtains hung on the barls ceiling. The glass curtains let the sunshine come in from skylights.

Using concrete for floor and oak for top of coctail bar make this area cool and warm. Oak strips barrels are nailed to one sidewall. The simple tables and chairs in both main dinning area and private dinning area are made of oak.

Bar Agricole services traditional mixed drinks from farmhouse distilling, natural wines, and Northern California cuisine made with ingredients sourced from local organic and biodynamic farms.

If you have a chance to San Francisco, you should drop by and enjoy the food with romantic and friendly atmosphere at Bar Agricole.

Designed by Xavier Pauchard for Tolix

Chantal Andriot took the helm of the French company Tolix in 2004, and through her passion for the brand and innovative approach, this iconic company has been revived. The new perforated collection (2009) was her idea - a brainstorm that came from seeing a piece of perforated steel in the factory. She challenged her team to design a chair that was perforated but still structurally sound. One year, and countless prototypes later, they succeeded. The perforated chairs and stools bring a unique twist to the classic Marais designed in 1934. The Marais collection will stand up to the rigors of public use, but should be protected from wet weather conditions to maintain the finish.

Walker Zanger - Sample Blog

Trends in tile:
Large module  and Smooth edges

Lots of glass sparkle and most is considered special order

Terra cotta will use wider grout joints.  These examples are a product that was reclaimed and will be availble in limited quantities. They are considered high end and the price point reflects that.

Leather finish on limestone not practical for counter/table applications because it scratches.

Clean edges are more popular than the tumbles and beveled edges, pocelian tile give you that look with very little maintenance.

Marble- unpolished is popular (honed)
Travertine - quarried at sea level, lots of holes, grout is slurried across to fill the holes or it might be factory finished
Limestone- smoother, honed finish with colors in the warm tonal ranges. A softer stone than travertine.

Some limestones can be harder than others. From turkey harder then the very popular French limestone

Mesh backed glass will not hold well in a pool, the paper faced works better
Pebbles are still popular and are available in standing and flat

Trecchiato is a product with actual gold or silver leaf.  The example of the pattern installed above the fireplace would cost $895/4 tile set.

Now onto the slab yard...
Organized into kitchen friendly vs. everything else
Although people are putting marble and limestone on kitchen counters all the time, it's not recommended. The most critical thing is to educate your client so they know what to expect

A few of the more specialty stones:
Honey onyx and nouvalato onyx - beautiful!

Quartzite - beautiful stone, this one is on the 'Kitchen Friendly' side.
