Coastline community college campus is on Monrovia Avenue in
an industrial section in north Newport Beach near Costa Mesa. None of the local
college campuses can boast such panoramic vistas – or the cooling ocean breezes
that come with the territory. The
campus is green from the ground till up, and it is one of the rare community
college campuses locally that's designed with a sustainability specification,
it means that it is efficient in using electricity, heating and water. Many of
the features at the new Coastline Community College in Newport Beach aid in the
building being gold LEED certified.
The college been built by sustainable design architecture
firm, LPA, and it’s been built to achieve Gold Leadership in Energy and
environmental Design (LEED) certification with solar panels, irrigation with
reclaimed water, zero storm runoff and sustainable roof garden.
66,000 square feet is the campus building size& 75%
portion of construction materials it’s been used for the project that were
recycled and diverted away from landfillsportion of the building that uses
unconditioned air is 25% , 33% less energy used by the building than what's
required by the state, 1.5 acres of additional land that the college bought to
boost number of parking spaces to minimize impact on surrounding neighborhood.
Although Coastline community College is not a big college
like OCC or GWC, but Coastline Community College has plenty of location to pick
from. The location ranged from a high school to a newly build building.
The
metal ceiling fans and a cool zone separating the outside from the classrooms
help in cooling the building.
The
aluminum screens, on right, aid in cooling the building by not allowing direct
sunlight to hit the wall
Double glass windows, the opening from the
sides are not adjustable (it’s fixed), & the panoramic view is just simply
relaxing.
The
panels will allow ocean views from inside the building and aid in cooling without
letting the direct sun hit it.
Simple
structure and yet very durable stairs, aluminum rail with stainless steel
banister is a great material combination that match the simplicity of the
concert stair.
at this section of the campus student can study or surf the internet or they
can use their personal electronics because there are many electrical socket for
plug in their electronic devices. Main time they can enjoy sitting on the
chairs that maid from recycled material and enjoy the brightness of the sun ray
via double glass windows and of course the Wi-Fi is available across the campus
for surfing the internet.
The color of the furniture are very nice, all
the furniture’s are cleanable and made from recycled products.
triangle trash can is a great design idea, and
perfectly match to the campus.
(Ladies
rest room) the idea of stainless steel doors of the restrooms is a great idea.
It’s very hygienic and durable.
(Ladies
rest room) the hand washing sink that it’s been made from recycled material is
cool an clever design, the vibrant yellow color is so nice with the stainless
steel drain in the middle,
I
like the brightness of the classrooms during day time while the lights are off
as well as the high ceiling
this
picture is one part of the office of the college, I like acoustical panels of
the ceiling as well as the colors, although it would have been better if the
offices of this building were bigger , in my opinion the office area of this
building are consider small while the entire campus is wide and huge.
After all, LPA sustainable design architecture firm has done
remarkable design and achieved the LEED Gold level for energy efficiency and
benefit to the environment.

community college website, and LPA website)

I LOVE the grass carpet! What a great way to bring the outdoors in!
Wow. I didn't know that Coastline has a beautiful interior like that. It's so relaxing. Maybe I will go taking some classes there.
I like the brightness of the classrooms as well. Usually bigger classrooms seem too big to me, but the way they are designed I really like them. It feels inviting. Also the seating area with the grass carpet is lovely. All those windows with that view would be nice for studying or doing class assignments.
Love the idea that 75% portion of the building construction materials were recycled. With Sustainability being a large topic today in design, they really did a great job to keep that in mind.
How on earth does the sink in the bathroom work? Is it like a trough sink and the whole thing drains at the strip? That is awesome. Maybe I should go visit just to check out the sink!
Love the sitting area with the green carpet and that view! It truely gives the impression of a garden and the natural light is beautiful.
grass carpet ROCKS!!! very creative!
The grass carpeting in the lounge area looks so cool. I wouldnt mind studying in that room. Seems so relaxing and what a great design.
The colors of the classroom is very nice , i like the stainless steal in the bathrooms
Great architecture and design! I like the fact that they used windows to bring line and light and made that a greater part of the design.
It is so true that the views from this campus are amazing, and the grass carpet on the second floor terrace commons area is really great way of bringing color and softness to the otherwise sterile and hard concrete walls. I was fortunate to be there during its inauguration last year and amongst the first students to take a class there last summer. If I remember correctly, the building represents a boat and the slanted window panels the sails of a boat. But just like when you are out at sea on a boat, it can get very windy and chilly quick...so bring a sweater.
I am so glad you wrote about this!! I have driven by and the building itself is amazing the way it slants. I have not been inside so i loved reading about the interior finishes!
Plenty use of steel throughout the campus giving it a modern and industrial design. Very cool with the hang out sitting area overlook to the beach. seems like a relaxing area to hang out.
