ID 150 Material/Product Research & Case Study Blog Entry By Sheré Clifford The current commercial project I chose to write about is the Global Café and Bookstore at Mariners Church in Irvine, California. I selected this because Mariners is my church and I’ve always loved the design of the new facilities. The design firm they used was G.S. Beckham Design Associates, Inc. which is located in Costa Mesa. Geoffrey Beckham started this company in 1991 but has been in the industry for 40 years. The company specialty is Food Service design and some of their clients are Marie Callender’s and recently Mother’s Market café’s. Initially when they got the opportunity to design the interior for the new café and bookstore, there was no specific direction required by the church other than they wanted an open floor plan that fit with the casual, beachy yet contemporary design of the church. There was no specific color scheme so Geoffrey had free reign to get creative. The design concept he chose was Tommy Bahama-ish, Jamaican flavor with an old world travel theme incorporating large tropical ceiling fans, open beamed ceilings, millwork with seagrass covered display cases and fixtures and hardware from a by-gone era. The products used: LITHOCHROME® Chemstain® Classic by Scofield was the chemical stain used on the concrete floors which gave a warm and worn finish. Granite counter tops by MS International, located in Orange, CA provided a subtle elegance to balance out the rustic feel of some of the other products. Ceiling Fans by Fanimation use organic and natural materials, such as real palm leaf blades and beautifully designed, rich bamboo blades to create a feeling of Island Living. Laminate Table Tops by Formica- Now an industry standard Formica has become synonymous with high quality and long lasting durability. Love Seats by Palacek- Palecek furniture is a family owned American company located in California. For more than 30 years Palecek has provided unique, beautiful and comfortable furniture and accessory designs. Their designs incorporate many natural materials such as rattan, water hyacinth, leather and solid hardwoods. This handsome Palecek furniture is also found in many exclusive resorts, hotels and restaurants throughout North America. Palecek furniture has become known for its high quality construction and attention to fine detail Rattan chairs by Gar- Seaside Woven Side Chair • Rust proof aluminum frame • Indoor / Outdoor nylon strands • Available in light and dark bamboo frame finish • 35 ¼” H x 22” D x 19 ½” W, 18” Seat Height Fabric by Architex: with Crypton protective finish. Crypton is an anti-microbial stain release topical treatment with a moisture resistant barrier. Barn Light Pendant Lighting by Barn Light Electric Co.- the barn pendants create a nostalgic appearance reminiscent of the 1930’s. Outdoor Umbrellas by Dayva were used on the outdoor patio of the café. I was very impressed by the products used and the whole overall design. Everything flowed and enhanced each element. It was an honor to meet Geoffrey Beckham and to see all that went into this beautiful project and I know my church is very grateful for his ability to create a space that fits perfectly with the rest of the church’s facilities.

Great choice for a case study project and so glad you got to meet the Designer. I got to work on a project with Geoff a few years ago, he was a pleasure to work with, so knowledgeable and talented. Nice information on the products used and the photos were great.
Fabulous research, Shere'! Information on manufacturers are helpful. I'll definitely stop by at this cafe next time I'm in the area.
I love the color scheme used in this project! It looks like a very inviting and relaxing place. I also think that the designer really achieved the Jamaican/old world travel theme.
I like this place, Starbucks has competition now. It doesn't look too casual or too formal either. I'm glad you were able to do this case study.
I love the sketches. I now want to go to that cafe!
